| The Strokes - Room on Fire |

Reviewing these boys is a pretty redundant exercise. And I don't just mean that in a love-em-or-hate-em way. And I'm not making a trite "writing about art is like monging on senselessly in a darkened panic room while no-one listens, no-one cares and you've lost the key" generalisation. Although that may also be true. It's just that they've changed nothing. Same production values, same loudhailer vocals, same semi-coordinated approach to playing the guitar. Brevity is the key. Again. Much has been made of the "reggae" element they've incorporated into their sound. This is the sound of desperate music journos looking for a new angle. Look, an upbeat chorus or two with offbeat, choppy rhythm guitar isn't going to have Bob Marley spinning in his grave. In short - if you liked the first 'un, this turns it into a double album. If you were left nonplussed, give it a wide berth. I'll be scaring people on the bus with it for quite a long time. I love it.
p.s. after a brief honeymoon, room on fire and I decided to go our separate ways. I got to keep my sanity, room on fire is gathering dust next to her older sister.
