Nothing complex to be written here. This is a return to core values - thus, if the basic Stripes sound appeals to you, you'll like this. Less experimental than Get Behind Me Satan, with none of that record's delving into marimba, mandolin and so on (although there are some bagpipes and the odd trumpet). Thirteen tracks, all guitar-based tunes, lots of humour, plenty of subtle writing, a bit of in-yer-face via the distortion pedal noise - return to form basically.
Unlike every other Stripes album, though, this was recorded in a "proper" studio - in other words they've moved away from the the "cut the tape with a razor blade" school of production and made use of a cutting-edge studio for the first time. The danger of over-producing has been avoided, luckily, but it does mean there are subtle layers of "second" guitars, organ, piano here and there. Nonetheless, it's still basically the sound of a bloke playing the guitar and a bird on drums arsing about with blues tunes.
